A New Kind of Computer

I've got this idea about a simple little box that would be sold by a big company. The box would be amazing because it would support most anything a CIO would want to do. More...

The Tricky Thing About Power

You have no more power than you believe you have.

You believed you lost your power over them,
then you indeed stopped exercising it
then you really lost your power ... simply because you lost your belief.

You failed to realize that your true power over them never diminished,
only it seemed to because they, the car
suddenly could drive fewer miles and could climb fewer hills.

"You have no more power than you believe" is not only a limiter, but an enabler.

Over confident people often attempt to exercise more power than they deserve, and ...
when they are successful at exercising it,
actually gain it

My Present

As a tide that flows in and out, where I am in life undulates with the many waves that also make my movement.

I may be Water, and that is unchanging.  That is what you may call my life goal or destination.  Yet I see it less a goal and more simply, "what I am", because I believe I now am all that I ever may be.  But ...

I may also be at high tide, a status that changes slowly and reflects one of my many passion states.  If I approach a passion state once, I know it will become a state ever part of my path, something that I will be nearer to and sometime farther from, but always enroute to ... coming into view sometimes each day, each month or on odd decades.  Yet ...

I am also the waves, up and down ... ever swaying as I revisit the tide states of my life

Consider it a Gift

Give him a gift of your horse ...
make an eternal friend

Ask him to feed and shelter your horse until the day it dies ...

The Journey

For some reason at this phase of life I feel a need to be less concerned about the destination and more concerned about the road.

The greatest journey does not always take you to the best destination.

Of course, we all share the same ultimate destination, and it is not life. --- wjones

Tombstone

A tough thing about life in America is that it can often be very lacking in purpose. We accumulate many things, but little real wealth.

One of the self help exercises I am working on is the writing of my tombstone.

If someone were to summarize my life in a few short words after my death, what would those words to be?

I think that understanding these words will help me better find my true path.

I also hope that once I am on the true path, the emptiness will go away.

The Root of Understanding

"You are the world, the neighbor, the friend, the so-called enemy. If you would understand, you must first understand yourself, for in you is the root of all understanding. In you is the begining and the end."

If you are very clear, if you are inwardly light onto yourself, you will never follow anyone"  ----J. Krishnamurti

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

The recent news about Warren Buffet and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation reminded me of a comment I made to a colleague a couple months ago. I said, "In thirty years, no one will remember that Bill did MS DOS or Windows. They won't remember that he was a hard charging Chief Executive who standardized desktop computing and a monopolist that often stretched the bounds of fair competition. They won't even think of him in the context of Microsoft. Instead, what they will remember will be the Gates Foundation... and Bill, the philanthropist." More...

Catching Up

I've published a major site revision. The new site is more focused, although not nearly as attractive looking as the old site. I think this is a better layout for my content, which seemed to get lost in the old site. Please send me your feedback.

Considering Electronic Matter Files

Document management will become the strategic responsibility of the records department - You are in a great position because you control (as I recall) both Records and IT. That was essential, because the conversion to Electronic Files as we call it, is first a product of the Professional Responsibility Committee (PRC) and Records Department and second a product of IT. Tanya, who runs our records and conflicts has become a defacto senior member of my organization ... and Ron, our General Counsel and head of the PRC is on my speed dial. Records and IT people have practically eaten and slept together each week for two years.

There are two conversions: document management and file management – ... And the file management conversion will last at least two years after the DM conversion. We ran two conversions, the standard IT new desktop hardware, new OS, new version of ... and an Electronic Files conversion that’s still underway. If you are like us, they last time you trained all your secretaries on how to use file folders was ... Never. This was a lesson that we learned late, the existence and value of the institutional knowledge on how to manage files for lawyers.

Here are some of the things we had to teach secretaries:
  • How to request custom top level electronic file folders via the New Business Process
  • How to manage the primary matter worklist for a lawyer
  • How to setup shortcuts to multiple lawyer’s matter workspaces
  • How to setup shortcuts and favorites for a lawyer to access his and other folders within matter workspaces
  • How to remove items from the matter workspace
  • How to re-file large sets of documents
....

We initially thought that with the Recent Documents, Recent Workspaces, and Favorites features in iManage, we could simply add new matters to the My Workspaces list and that would be it. Imagine a merged support team of 20 people from IT and records, web based surveys of all firm members, a status level of red, yellow, or green for each person as to their ability to work in electronic files.

Each secretary had to be taught nearly one-on-one
independent of the technology conversion that showed secretaries how to use the software, they needed each to be sat down separately from the technology and taught how to manage file folders for their lawyers electronically.
