We all remember Leonardo da Vinci for his inventiveness and his art. Most of us recognize works such as The Last Supper and his anatomically correct sketch of a Vitruvian Man.
But few know much about da Vinci and how he transcended from genius to singular accomplishment. How could he have learned how to draw the human body with such precision when there were only a few poor quality texts on human anatomy? According to Sherwin Nuland, the answer was that Leonardo dissected corpses each night. With saw in hand, he meticulously dismembered the dead, learning all he could about the structure of bones, muscles and tendons. Since the church of the day frowned upon such activity, he had to keep his work very quiet.
In following his macabre interest, da Vinci advanced the knowledge of anatomy for all human kind.
I believe progress is often a simple by-product of men and women pursuing their interests.
